 NANDINA (HEAVENLY BAMBOO)

Botanical Name: Nandina Domestica and "Nana Compacta"

Specs: Shrub; semideciduous; resembles bamboo w/ canelike stems and delicate foliage; slow to moderate growth to 7’ tall, easily pruned; new foliage pinkish, then light green turning fiery crimson in fall; small pink/white flowers give way to red berries; handles full sun, but prefers some shade; needs rich soil w/ ample water; deer proof;  ‘Nana Compacta’ variety only 18” tall, same green lacy foliage, spectacular red in the fall.

 

 NATAL PLUM

Botanical Name: Carrisa Macrocarpa

Specs: Shrub; evergreen; easy to grow to 5’ tall; lustrous, round rich green oval leaves; 2” wide white flowers as fragrant as Star Jasmine; edible red plum shaped fruit; excellent for hedges or screening; strong growth and spines discourage foot traffic; ‘Tuttle’ variety is compact and used as a groundcover w/ heavy blooms and fruit.

Botanical Name: Nierembergia Hippomanica Violacea (Caerulea)

Specs: Perennial; grows 6-12” high; stiff narrow leaves on mounded plant; 1” wide blue, bell-like flowers bloom throughout the summer; good edging plant; takes full sun, good soil and average water; attractive hanging basket plant.
